Water Sensitive Urban Design Report

WSUD Reports

What is a Water Sensitive Urban Design Report or sometimes known as a STORM Water Management plan?

A WSUD (Water Sensitive Urban Design) Report is a document that is required on almost every type of development whether it be Residential, Residential Extension (Exceeding 50 sqm) Commercial, Industrial, or an Apartment Complex that council would like the building to achieve a certain reduction in the following:

  • Suspended solids – 80% retention of typical urban annual load
  • Total Nitrogen – 45% retention of typical urban annual load
  • Total Phosphorus – 45% retention of typical urban annual load
  • Litter – 70% reduction of typical urban annual load

These reductions are shown through various available tools such as:

  • MUSIC (Model for Urban Stormwater Improvement Conceptualisation)
  • STORM Calculator provided by Melbourne Water
  • InSite Water tool (Only accepted/requested by few Councils)

The assessment is based on the entire proposed site & buildings and all impervious areas within it. An initial assessment without any treatment measures other than water tanks take place to see how the site can perform utilising only water tanks. If however these do not succeed, we communicate with the parties involved and start using other treatment methods such as raingardens, buffer strips, pervious paving & enviss pits.

After we achieve a score of 100% STORM score or greater, we then create a clear roof catchment plan on what is required to achieve WSUD excellence and meets the council expectations.

More Information

How important is having a knowledgeable WSUD
(Water Sensitive Urban Design) consultant engaged?

Since a WSUD (Water Sensitive Urban Design) is part of the planning application process it is very important to have someone who understands the client expectations as well as how to use the WSUD tools efficiently as any treatment type or design features contributing to the WSUD (Water Sensitive Urban Design) are concreted into place. If these aren’t properly coordinated with the relevant parties it can cause many issues later on which will ultimately result in holding up your application or in the worst-case scenario require you to go back to Town Planning to amend the application.

Getting Started

How to get started with WSUD (Water Sensitive Urban Design)

All we need to get started on your WSUD (Water Sensitive Urban Design) is your latest Town Planning Plans.

Ideally, the plans would also include a roof plan & water tank location, but this can be created and advised on by our team if required. You can then expect to hear from us with a preliminary solution in the coming days to follow in which we will discuss further our options.
